Michael J. Shelley
I direct the Center for Computational Biology at the Flatiron Institute, and am a Senior Research Scientist in the Biophysical Modeling group. I am also a mathematics professor at the Courant Institute of New York University where I co-founded the Applied Math Lab. My research focuses on self-organizational processes in biology and soft-matter physics using the tools of mathematical modeling, analysis, the development of numerical methods, and large-scale simulation.

SF has written a very nice description on our work on self-inhibiting growth:
Claustrophobic Cells Slow Their Own Growth, Forming Beautiful Patterns of Concentric Circles.
Here is another from SciTechDaily:
When Cells Get Stressed, They Create Mesmerizing Growth Patterns.
See the paper Mechanics and Morphology of Proliferating Cell Collectives with Self-Inhibiting Growth, by S Weady, B Palmer et al, in Physical Review Letters 2024.
